One of the most popular forms of casino gambling is roulette. It is also one of the oldest games in history. There is little mathematics involved in casino roulette gambling. This is perhaps one of the reasons why it is easy to understand and to learn. Casino roulette gambling has more to do with chance than with anything else.
Casino Roulette Gambling: History
It is commonly believed that the wheel used in casino roulette gambling was invented by the 17th century French mathematician Blaise Pascal during a monastic retreat. Other versions of the story purported that an earlier version of the game was played in China much earlier than that. No matter. The real origins of casino roulette gambling remain a mystery to this day.
In the 1800s, Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc introduced the single-zero wheel to casino roulette gambling. This wheel type became standardized in Europe but was rejected in America where the double-zero wheel is much more popular. This caused a great impact on the history of casino roulette gambling. Up to this day, single-zero wheels permeate European casinos while double-zeros continue to spin in American gambling houses.
Casino Roulette Gambling: Types of Wheels
There are two types of wheels used in casino roulette gambling. The first type is the double-zero or commonly called, the American Wheel. This wheel is comprised of 38 numbers from 0, 00, and 1 through 36. Because there are two zeros in the American Wheel, the house advantage is higher at 5.26% than that of the European Wheel.
The European Wheel contains 37 numbers, 0 through 36. It is sometimes called the French Wheel or the Single-Zero. When you play casino roulette gambling using the French Wheel, the house has an edge percentage of 2.7% over you. This means that for every $100-bet you place, the house makes $2.70 in profit.
You have more chances of winning in European casino roulette gambling than in the American game. This is because with a European Wheel, the house has twice less advantage than with its American cousin.
Casino Roulette Gambling: Rules
Some casinos offer certain rules that give players better odds at winning. These rules are En Prison and La Partage. These two rules are most commonly found in European casino roulette gambling and can significantly lower down the advantage of the house.
In casino roulette gambling, ‘En Prison’ means that the player has the option to “imprison” his bet should the ball land on the number 0. His bet will remain until the next spin. However, if he does not want to keep his bet, then he only needs to surrender half of his bet and collect the other half.
Another rule in casino roulette gambling is called ‘La Partage’ where the only option the player has when the ball lands on 0 is to surrender of his bet. Both the La Partage and En Prison rules apply only to ‘outside’ even-money bets, such as Red/Black, High/Low, or Odd/Even. When either of these rules is in place in casino roulette gambling, the house advantage is cut in half.
So, for example, if you place an outside bet on Red, the house advantage is lowered down to 1.35% if you’re in a European table, or 2.63% if you’re in an American table.
